Drive Blue Streak wheelchair with gray arms

Story: A Wheelchair Recycled to Help an Unhoused Neighbor

This modest, blue wheelchair was donated to our Resale/Rehome program by Arbor Terrace Independent Senior Living, one of our Charter Community Care partners located in Herndon, Virginia.

It had a pretty rough life before coming to us, damaged—probably when being transported in a vehicle—and in need of replacement of a few minor bits. We rehabilitated it using parts from other donated wheelchairs, getting it back to fully functioning original condition.

In the spring of 2026, it found a new purpose when it was provided at no cost to a local person struggling with homelessness. We tweaked it a bit to optimize it for the recipient’s temporary needs, including adding weatherproof arms; a water-resistant gel seat cushion; and a large, removable tote bag that hangs on the back of the seat.

It’s awesome when we can find a home for a used mobility device before it ends up in the waste stream. We love it even more when it can make an impactful difference for someone who needs it. This story could not have ended happily without the support of our partners at Arbor Terrace and a caring human services staff member with Fairfax County who reached out for assistance.
